Can You Safely Get Laser Treatments During Summer?

For years, patients were told to avoid cosmetic laser treatments in the summer. Sun exposure is still an important consideration, but modern research shows that certain laser procedures can be performed safely in warmer months when the right technology, conservative settings, qualified providers, and proper aftercare are in place.

The main risk associated with summer laser treatments is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH, a condition in which the skin darkens after inflammation or injury. It happens because ultraviolet exposure stimulates melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing pigment. Recent tanning, heavy UV exposure, and aggressive laser settings can all raise this risk, especially in patients with darker skin tones.

Not all lasers carry the same level of risk. Traditional ablative lasers, such as aggressive CO2 resurfacing, remove portions of the skin surface and require longer healing times. Because they create more inflammation, they are generally considered higher risk during the summer months.

Newer non-ablative and fractional lasers, picosecond lasers, and radiofrequency-based treatments work differently. They stimulate collagen production while leaving much of the skin barrier intact. These technologies produce fewer complications and shorter recovery times, and they may be safer options during periods of increased sun exposure.

A large systematic review published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal (PubMed, April 2022) found that, although non-ablative laser treatments are generally safe, the most common side effect remains PIH, particularly in Fitzpatrick skin types IV through VI. Careful patient selection, a thorough pre-treatment consultation, realistic expectations, and detailed aftercare instructions all help reduce the risk of complications.

In other words, summer laser safety depends less on the season itself and more on patient behavior before and after treatment.

To protect your results, our providers commonly recommend:

  • Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 to 50+ with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide

  • Avoiding direct sun exposure

  • Wearing hats and protective clothing

  • Avoiding treatment on recently tanned skin, including natural or spray tans

  • Following gentle post-procedure skincare instructions

That said, treatment should always be individualized based on skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure habits, and the condition being treated.

Modern laser technology has made year-round treatments more possible than ever before. However, successful outcomes still depend on proper technique, conservative settings, and excellent sun protection before and after treatment.

At Mount Pleasant Dermatology, we recommend scheduling a personalized consultation before starting any laser treatment. Once this is completed, we can better understand your skin goals, summer plans, sun exposure, and current skincare regimen, so we can create the safest and most effective treatment plan for you.

Your safety and satisfaction are our priority. Schedule your consultation today and let us help you achieve healthy, beautiful skin with confidence.
